80th Anniversary of D-Day
Long Sutton Parish Council were pleased to hold two events to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings to honour those brave young souls who gave their lives to liberate Europe and defend the United Kingdom so that we can all enjoy the freedoms we have today.
The first event was on Thursday 06 June 2024 when the town beacon was lit by the Long Sutton Watch of the Lincolnshire Fire Brigade with the names of those from Long Sutton who had fallen during this campaign recited by veterans of the armed forces. A Piper paid homage to them with haunting tunes and playing the reveille following a minute’s silence and prayers said by Father J Sibley.
A family day was held on 09 June 2024 with 1940s music provided by the local choir and singers, fairground rides, food stalls, traditional games of splat the rat and other age-old favourites with the marbles in the pot bringing game bringing out the competitive streak of many!
A dog show was also held with proceeds going to Charity and it was great to see all the lovely dogs enjoying the day and meeting up with their compatriots.
All in all, the events were lovely and hopefully a fitting tribute to all those who we remembered and whose honour the events were held.
Thank you to all those who took part and supported the events.
It is very much appreciated.
